The purpose of a sound system is to allow the person at the front to be heard and understood by everybody else.

The System starts with a person making a noise, whether that be a singer, someone speaking or an instrument being played.  This sound is picked up by a microphone or an instrument pickup, both of which turn the sound into an electrical signal.  The signal travels along cables into the mixing desk, effects processing and amplifier (all operated by another person)  The amplifier then sends the signal via speaker cables to the speakers.  These convert the electrical signal into sound which moves through the air to whoever is listening to what the person at the front is trying to say.
